Small Circle of Friends
The scripture bags have been a project in the works for years with Scott and Ben, until the commitment was made to make them a reality with he help of their brother Sam. Years ago, Supernal was a name that represented an idea of fresh new music from fellow mormon friends and family, which has now grown into a fun way of sharing our designs and ideas with others around the world. We started making music in 2002 with the release of our first product, a CD entitled "Our Turn", a music compilation of eclectic LDS musicians and songwriters making "spiritual" music. This was a great experience to create music that was both inspirational and interesting in style. It brought a lot of great music styles together that wouldn't normally be found with other traditional LDS music out there.
The idea for making scripture bags came to us after the Our Turn CD as we thought of more creative ways to share our artistic designs and talents. We wanted to brings some new and fresh color and style to the world of scripture totes. Clothing design, hand-crafted vinyl bags and art has been an ongoing hobby and talent around our small circle of friends in our home town of Brea, California. One Christmas Ruth made Scott a scripture cover with his name on it by cutting and sewing vinyl letters onto a white vinyl scripture case she bought at Deseret Book. Soon after, our friends Julia and Erica started making fun colorful scripture covers for themselves and their new convert friends that were baptized into their singles ward. We took one of their designs which later on came to become the Julia bag. There was small buzz around our group of friends and family about these cool scripture cover craftings.
Scott and Ben continued coming up with ideas on how to make and sell scripture totes and how to make them available to all people. After much thought, research and help from friends and family, Scott, Ben and Sam Schultz decided to go forward and make 6 original designs for our first bag release. Julia spent hours cutting and sewing with Colt to put together our first scripture case sample in mid 2005, Scott and Ruth crafted together hang tag ideas and after months of deliberation, Ben found a manufacturer in China who could make our designs and samples into a reality. Before Christmas 2005 we launched a little kick-off party for friends and family and we were surprised at all of the interest people had in our scripture cover designs. We are so grateful for the support and excitement that people have shared about our scripture bag designs and hopefully many of you can find our totes at Deseret Book, Seagull Book and most independent LDS Bookstores. Let us know of any suggestions or improvements to the bags you think would be great. If you have any designs or interest in designing, please email us at:
